Graphic Types

Many graphic editing programs will allow you to save the image as each type. Play around and see what works best. Does a GIF cause too much quality loss? Would the same image saved as a JPG take more time to download? You'll need to experiment in many cases. But remember as a rule, JPG for photographs and GIF for text only or simple images with few colors.

Look at the example and see the image quality and size.

PNG                      GIF                         JPG

10.7KB                 4.30KB                  4.22KB

Notice the quality of the JPG? good file size, but it suffered some quality loss. The PNG in this case has more than double the file size of the similar looking GIF. GIF wins this round.

While it has a slightly larger file size, the quality difference is worth the .08KB

Let's move on now to a discussion about content.
